Tummy Tuck - A Primer to Surgical Procedures for a Flat Stomach img 1

‘I had a tummy tuck this morning, I tucked it right into my high-waisted leggings.’  – Anonymous

If you have had a baby or are on the path to recovery after pregnancy, chances are you are looking forward to losing those extra pounds and regaining your toned figure as soon as possible. But all those exercises and healthy diets are not giving results, and are rather testing your patience. Welcome to the realm of plastic surgery! Here you can easily get back to being pretty and petite just like you were before getting pregnant or gaining weight due to other lifestyle habits.

Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is not a new procedure in the world of cosmetic surgery. Surgeons around the world are known to the concept of removing that extra skin and tucking in your stomach so that you can enjoy the famous hourglass shape after giving birth too.

But what is rather unknown is that there are conditions one must fulfill to become eligible for getting a tummy tuck surgery. One must understand that tummy tuck is not an alternative to weight-loss as it can only produce results if you are already at a healthy weight. What tummy tuck essentially does is it helps you get rid of loose skin due to weight loss, and damaged muscles. Hence it is always helpful to have realistic expectations from the procedure for your own emotional and psychological well-being.

A common myth associated with the tummy tuck procedure is that one cannot become pregnant after getting their tummy tucked by cosmetic surgery. While it is possible to get pregnant and carry the pregnancy to full-term, it will completely undo the results of a tummy tuck as your body expands and you gain weight. Hence, it is always advisable to have a tummy tuck done to your belly after you are happy with the size of your family and no longer plan to get pregnant again.

Leading a disciplined lifestyle by exercising and eating healthy will only ensure that you don’t go back to your loose skin and obese body.

As every person has different needs and reasons to turn to plastic surgery, a consultation with a qualified and experienced physician is the best way to know your eligibility, procedure steps, alternatives, risks, and benefits of the procedure before going for a tummy tuck. Also, a few case-studies of prior patients and their before and after photos will help you in giving an idea about what to expect after the surgery.

After the consultation, if you think it is okay for you to go for the procedure, do prepare well in advance by following the guidelines issued by your surgeon or physician.

A tummy tuck, like most other surgical procedures, involves general anesthesia, incisions, and stitches. It involves creating a horizontal incision beneath your belly button to remove excess skin and repair the abdominal muscles underneath. As a tummy tuck is commonly performed as a part of a mommy makeover, it is performed by board-certified, trained, and experienced surgeons who have performed successful tummy tucks before. Tummy tuck surgeries do not cater to stretch marks removal separately, however, the marks on your loose skin will go away as you get rid of the loose skin permanently. And thus, there is no guarantee that you will be of stretch marks after the surgery.

After the procedure is complete, you will need to take some time away from your daily routine and work responsibilities. It is important to rest for at least two weeks after the tummy tuck surgery to recover from the feeling of soreness and discomfort due to recent stitches. A bruised and swollen abdomen right after the surgery is normal and the scars will gradually begin to fade away as you heal and the incision lines can be hidden under most bathing suits and underwear.

Once the body is completely healed, you will love every bit of your newly contoured, tight silhouette you always fancied.

On average, a tummy tuck will cost you about $6,253. But this cost can be easily buffed up due to other factors such as your location, surgeon’s experience, operating room facilities, and other overhead expenses such as medical tests, medications, and post-surgical garments.
