With baby boomers flush with solid pensions, 401Ks and rising investments, more are splurging on cosmetic surgery. Seniors are increasingly spending on facelifts, eyelifts and other procedures to rejuvenate and refresh their appearance.
While younger people might seek cosmetic surgery for job or professional reasons, seniors often just want to take a few years off or just want a more youthful appearance to match their still young attitudes and feelings about themselves.
Common procedures for seniors include:
Facelift. As you get older, your facial skin usually sags and loosens. A facelift can provide a more youthful shape and appearance. The surgery lifts facial soft tissues, removes excess skin and drapes skin back over the newly repositioned contours. Many people include a neck lift at the same time as a face lift.
Eyelid tightening. As aging eyelids stretch, the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, drooping upper lids and bags under your eyes. Besides making you look older, severely sagging skin around your eyes can impair your peripheral or side vision. When this happens, surgery is sometimes covered by insurance (check with your plan). Surgery repairs droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle and fat and can improve vision by eliminating the sagging skin that blocks your vision.
Liposuction. Liposuction uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck. Liposuction also shapes (contours) these areas. Liposuction, used in conjunction with exercise and a sensible diet, can help improve the shape of the body.
