When it comes to a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, one question often asked is how to minimize the scar. While tummy tucks do create a scar, Dr Kolder does his best to place these scars in areas where they are less likely seen.

While everyone heals differently, scars should heal and fade with time. But once your procedure is complete, there are some things that you can do to aid the healing process and help reduce the scar’s appearance.

Keep Your Incisions Clean and Follow Post-Op Instructions

The best way to achieve good results when it comes to your tummy tuck scar is to follow Dr. Kolder’s post-op instructions for incision care. Making sure to keep your incision clean and avoiding tension on the incision area will help promote healing and reduce the risk of infection, which can contribute to more pronounced scarring.

Avoid Sun Exposure

While you may be tempted to flaunt your new look in a bikini or hit the tanning beds to add a little color, take care to keep that scar away from UV exposure. Fresh tummy tuck scars that are still pink are extremely sensitive to UV rays and can burn very easily. UV exposure can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, causing your scar to turn dark or even brown.

Treat Scar with Recommended Products

Topical treatments can normally be applied to incision sites once the incision scabs and completely closes. Dr. Kolder will recommend what products are best and when to start applying them to the incision site. Silicone gel, cream or sheeting is often recommended as they keep the area hydrated and halt excess collagen production, which can contribute to excess scarring.

When it comes to your incision and reducing the resulting scar, the key is to follow the instructions from Dr. Kolder. Avoid clothing that can irritate your incision area, keep your incision clean and stay out of the sun. Following these tips can help keep your scarring to a minimum and allow you to enjoy your tummy tuck results.
