One of the most common questions that Dr. Kolder gets during mommy makeover consultations is, “What’s the ideal weight for a mommy makeover?” Understandably so, many women who are considering a mommy makeover may not be exactly at their target weight yet. While this by no means disqualifies someone from getting a mommy makeover, there are some general guidelines to keep in mind when preparing for this or any body contouring procedure.
Aim for within 10 to 20 Pounds of Your Goal Weight
A good rule of thumb is to aim for coming within 10 to 20 pounds of your ideal target weight before moving forward with a mommy makeover. This not only helps to ensure a safe, smooth procedure and recovery, but it can also help you achieve the best possible result.
Being close to your target weight prior to your mommy makeover allows Dr. Kolder to contour your body more precisely and tighten skin to match your current body shape. Extra body fat at the time of surgery can limit how much skin can be removed, which may reduce final tightening. If, on the other hand, you were to get a mommy makeover and then lose a significant amount of weight in the future, you may need a revision procedure to address new excess skin.
Why BMI Matters
Dr. Kolder will also take your BMI into account when determining if you could be a good candidate for a mommy makeover. The general guideline is to reach a BMI of 30 or under before proceeding with cosmetic surgery. This is to help ensure a safe procedure and recovery with a minimized risk of complications.
Because BMI simply takes into account a person’s weight compared to their height, this number can be slightly skewed, particularly in people with high muscle mass. If you are concerned about this, you can also measure your waist to hip ratio, which can provide a more accurate assessment of your overall health and potential surgical risks.
How Much Will I Lose with a Mommy Makeover?
A second common question that many patients ask Dr. Kolder is, “How much weight will I lose with a mommy makeover?” It is important to keep in mind that a mommy makeover is not a weight loss procedure, so you should not expect to lose a significant amount of weight afterward. However, due to excess skin and some stubborn fat being removed, you may lose 5 to 10 pounds and your clothes should fit better.
Despite losing some weight and/or inches off your waist after a mommy makeover, it’s crucial to maintain healthy eating and exercise habits after your procedure for long-lasting results.
