By now, all of America (and perhaps the world) has seen the amazing transformation of Mama June Shannon as documented in the recent WE TV reality series “Mama June: From Not to Hot.” Now meet the Doctor behind her amazing new body.
Last fall, Dr. Daniel Kolder met with the reality star after she had lost nearly 300 pounds via diet, exercise, and gastric sleeve surgery. While the 37 year old had achieved her weight loss goals, she was left with excessive skin and sagging as a result. Over the course of several months and two major surgeries, Dr. Kolder was able to help Shannon to achieve the body she had always hoped for.
How did Mama June select you as her surgeon? June and her production team at the show were looking for someone credible and down to earth and found our practice. They liked our before and after photos and reached out to us. The whole process was very similar to how any other patient would find our practice and we feel very fortunate that people outside of Ventura County are able to find our practice – it’s humbling.
What procedures did you perform on Mama June? In the first surgery we performed a tummy tuck, liposuction, a breast lift and added some volume with an implant. For the second round of surgery we did her arms and a facelift. Significant weight loss can lead to excess and sagging skin which can be uncomfortable both mentally and physically and I was pleased to be able to offer June help to achieve her aesthetic goals.
Mama June underwent a gastric sleeve procedure to lose the weight, how does that impact what you do as a Plastic Surgeon? A lot of people when they are 200-300 pounds overweight all they worry about is getting rid of the weight and they are willing to exchange the weight for extra skin. But when the excess skin becomes their problem that is where I come in and I am the tailor that gives you that new suit once you have taken off all that weight.
What was it like being on TV and having a reality star in your practice? Our part was just us and I think gave people a real insight into what really happens at our practice. We made sure that we did things the way we would for any other patient. To us she is June Shannon, she is a patent in our practice and we give her the same experience and the same level of care that all of our patients receive.
Dr. Kolder is a graduate of Creighton University undergraduate and medical school in Omaha, Nebraska. Following medical school, he completed his Plastic Surgery residency training at the University of Missouri.
